The films made by the Milan Militant Cinema Collective
The 17 films and clips made by the Milan-based Militant Cinema Collective and Movimento Studentesco, found by Ranuccio Sodi after years of research and digitalized by the CIAN, depict a crucial period in our recent history, i.e., the decade that begins with the great protests of the late sixties, goes through the ‘hot autumn,’ and copes with the strategy of tension first and the ‘Years of Lead’ later. These films were made with scarce means by budding film-makers who were then students, factory workers, and ‘democratic’ intellectuals with the goal of documenting whatever happened around them. These works now give us a picture of some key issues of that intense time of life.
The 57th Pesaro Film Festival presents a selection of three short films: Maggioranza silenziosa (1972); Pagherete caro, pagherete tutto (1975), Bologna '77 (1977)

Maggioranza silenziosa (The Silent Majority), 1972, 15’
Shot by the Militant Cinema Collective, a silent 16mm film in colour and B&W that documents the demonstration organized by the ‘silent majority’ in front of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan on March 11, 1972. Franco Servello and a young Ignazio La Russa take the floor. Law enforcement agencies were deployed to contain a simultaneous anti-fascist demonstration. The faces of the demonstrators were erased from the negative to avoid identification. Some of this footage was re-used by Marco Bellocchio in his film Slap the Monster on Page One.
