The film sets - complicated structures with tunnels, staircases, elaborate gears, springs, and wheels, with machinery ticking throughout the film - are the world of the titular orphaned boy, who lives within the walls of a train station and secretly maintains its gargantuan clocks. For Scorsese, this plot is also an excuse to tell the ‘mechanical’ story, and not just that, of early cinema and to pay tribute to the forefather of film directors, Georges Méliès. With this film, production designer Dante Ferretti won his third Oscar; his drawing and designs were exhibited at the New York MoMA, including the train-station huge clock.
