The voice-over memories of a housekeeper moving to Bangkok are triggered by a film her daughter sends her. The film weaves together found footage and archival artefacts into a personal history of Thailand. “My research focuses on the historical relationship between the United States and Thailand and the concept of crypto-colonization during the Cold War through archival materials including documents, magazines, films produced by the United States Information Service. I want to show the aftereffects of so-called ‘development,’ and how it resulted in exploiting people outside Bangkok.” (Chanasorn Chaikitiporn)
Chanasorn Chaikitiporn is a filmmaker and moving image artist whose work explores and interrogates the socio-political history of Thailand. He delves into questions on culture, political thought, identity and personal historical memory through the lens of semi-coloniality. Bridging the gap between fiction and documentary film, he investigates found footage, archival and declassified documents. Chanasorn is a member of ELSE, a moving image screening series based in Bangkok.
