THE 61ST INTERNATIONAL NEW CINEMA FESTIVAL WILL BE HELD IN PESARO FROM 14 TO 21 JUNE 2025

The new edition of the Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema will be held from 14 to 21 June 2025 with the contribution of the Ministero della Cultura – Direzione Generale Cinema e Audiovisivo, Comune di Pesaro and Regione Marche.

The calls for applications are now open for the Pesaro Nuovo Cinema Competition, for films without any constraints on format, genre, duration and language (deadline: 15 April) and the first Italian video essay competition – (Ri)Montaggi – aimed at film students from all over the world (deadline: 30 April).

After the success of the last edition that saw the Festival celebrate the important milestone of 60 editions in the very year in which Pesaro was a protagonist in Italy and in the world as the Italian Capital of Culture 2024, the Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema is preparing to celebrate its first 60 years with a program increasingly attentive to the new forms and new languages of cinema but continuing to tell the story of the excellence of Italian cinema.

The traditional Special Event on Italian cinema, in collaboration with the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale, will be dedicated to Gianni Amelio, one of the great masters of our cinema who has just turned 80, one of the most cinephile and ‘experimental’ (the first TV films on Rai). Through the retrospective of his films, the publication of a monograph edited by Pedro Armocida and Anton Giulio Mancino, published by Marsilio in the historic Nuovocinema series, and a round table open to the public, the Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema will pay homage to the great award-winning director and screenwriter who commented on the Special Event dedicated to him as follows: “In 1970 someone scolded me for not having submitted my first film La fine del gioco to the Pesaro Festival. At the time I didn’t think about it: Nuovo Cinema was a goal that I felt I didn’t deserve. But the following year I worked on the notebook dedicated to Nagisa Oshima and got to know all his films. Months later, when Oshima came to Rome, I welcomed him at the Rivoli cinema with a brief and daring speech in Japanese. Then a friendship was born, one of the most fertile of my life. Now, after many years, I dedicate to his memory the Special Event that Pesaro is offering me and that I welcome with deep gratitude”.

The Mayor of the city Andrea Biancani declares: “The city is preparing to celebrate the first 60 years of the International Festival of New Cinema. One that represents the flagship of the initiatives proposed by the dense cultural program that every year it makes available to citizens and tourists, both national and international. The 2025 edition will be characterized by the continuous exploration of the contemporary cinematic panorama, with a particular focus on the innovation and excellence that distinguishes it; an occasion that every year allows us to give visibility and prestige to the entire territory, always looking at the “new” with foresight. It will be an honor to host in Pesaro Maestro Gianni Amelio, to whom this 61st Festival is dedicated and among the first authors of the Rai “experimentals” that brought the most significant qualities of non-commercial cinema to television for the first time. We are aware that today the Pesaro International Festival of New Cinema still has potential to express and will be one of the main objectives of this new administration, enhancing and promoting it, increasingly linking the name of the city to that of the historic Festival.
