Elena Duque
Ojitos mentirosos / Deceitful Eyes
Spagna 2023, 6’
Ojitos mentirosos relies on the magic of trompe-l’oeil, collage, and cinema itself. The 8mm ‘eye’ watches streets and buildings of Madrid. Or does it? Gradually, a hand enters the frame and shows photographs, in succession or partially overlapping, of the same urban views we have been watching. The pictures are progressively manipulated by way of paint strokes, or stains, which alter even more the cityscapes, definitively switching from the supposed naturalistic filming to a fabricated artefact. The warm, yellow dominant reminds us of another Iberian ‘casa amarela,’ while an initially indistinct sound gradually grows into the buzz of cicadas and then into a popular song, precisely ‘Ojitos mentirosos’, the deceitful gaze that tricks the eye of the lover/viewer.
